Mathematics is often perceived as a difficult and tedious subject, but this misconception couldn't be further from the truth! Having taught Mathematics for more than 10 years in Singapore, I've witnessed numerous students overcome this perception, gain self-confidence, and achieve their desired academic results. The key lies not just in learning formulae, but in developing strong mathematical thinking skills. By breaking down complex concepts and establishing meaningful connections, I make mathematics easily understandable, going far beyond rote memorisation. My approach focuses on nurturing critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and logical reasoning – the core components of mathematical thinking. These skills not only make maths easier to grasp but are also invaluable in many aspects of life and future careers. I believe in a holistic approach where new skills are built upon previous knowledge, creating a solid foundation for advanced concepts. Moreover, I strive to connect classroom learning to real-world applications, demonstrating how mathematical thinking is used in everyday situations. This method of fostering mathematical thinking has proven highly effective. Today, many of my students are confidently pursuing degrees in Accountancy, Mathematics, and Computer Science at renowned local universities, applying the problem-solving skills they developed in our sessions. Remember, mathematics isn't about memorising formulae – it's about understanding concepts and developing a way of thinking. With the right approach, maths can be not just easy, but also engaging and empowering!
My Journey
Ever since I was young, my fascination with numbers ignited a deep curiosity within me. I enjoyed spending countless hours tackling challenging mathematical problems. This passion for mathematics guided me towards pursuing a degree in Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University and a Master's Degree in Mathematics at the National University of Singapore, cementing my dedication to the subject. After completing my studies, I sought to challenge myself further by embarking on a career as a software developer and data scientist. Throughout my professional journey, I have been fortunate to work with prestigious multinational corporations and government sectors. It was during this time that I realised the boundless real-life applications of mathematics. In today's age of data science, numbers, equations, and algorithms surround us constantly. Understanding vast datasets requires statistical models and analysis, showcasing the indispensable role of mathematics. This discipline provides me with a unique perspective on the world that no other field can offer. My experiences in the professional world have reinforced my belief in the importance of teaching mathematical thinking, not just mathematical procedures. Mathematical thinking involves problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and the ability to see patterns and connections. These skills are crucial not only for success in mathematics but also for navigating the complexities of our data-driven world. At Mathathon, my goal is to instil this type of thinking in my students. I strive to create an environment where students don't just memorise formulae but understand the underlying concepts and can apply them to real-world situations. My approach emphasises critical thinking, problem-solving, and the practical application of mathematical concepts, where I guide students to discover mathematical truths for themselves. In summary, my personal journey and experiences have instilled in me a profound appreciation for mathematics and its diverse applications. I am dedicated to transforming the learning landscape, fostering a love for mathematical thinking, and ultimately crafting an educational experience that nurtures the unique needs and aspirations of every learner.
